Morningstar, Inc. is a leading provider of independent investment research in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, and is widely considered one of the most recognized and trusted names in the investment industry. Morningstar provides data on approximately 525,000 investment offerings, including stocks, mutual funds, and similar vehicles, along with real-time global market data on nearly 18 million equities, indexes, futures, options, commodities, and precious metals, in addition to foreign exchange and Treasury markets.

Morningstar Fund Ratings work by assigning mutual funds a rating from 1 to 5 stars based on how well they’ve performed (after adjusting for risk and accounting for sales charges) in comparison to similar funds. Within each Morningstar Category, the top 10% of funds receive 5 stars and the bottom 10% receive 1 star. Funds are rated for up to three time periods-three-, five-, and 10-years and these ratings are combined to produce an overall rating. Funds with less than three years of history are not rated. Ratings are objective, based entirely on a mathematical evaluation of past performance. They’re a useful tool for identifying funds worthy of further research, but shouldn’t be considered buy or sell signals.

Disclosure: Morningstar updates its ratings each year for the defined periods based on the performance of the previous year period, accounting for significant changes in the fund compared to the tracked categories. Vista 401(k) will monitor for any such changes but cannot guarantee that, if updates occur, that they will be discovered on a timely basis.

Alpha and Beta are both risk ratios that investors may use as a tool to calculate, compare and predict returns. Both measurements utilize benchmark indexes, such as the S&P 500, and compare them against the individual security to highlight a particular performance tendency.

Alpha ratios are used as a method to measure the difference between a portfolio’s actual returns and what it might be expected to deliver based on its level of risk and other market factors. The baseline number for Alpha is 0, with positive alpha generally meaning good performance relative to the comparable market and negative alpha meaning poor performance.

Beta is used as a gauge for volatility of a specific security compared to the performance of a related benchmark or overall market over a period of time. The baseline number for beta calculations is one. If beta is a one this is an indication the security’s price moves in line with the market. If beta is less than one, the security is less volatile, and if greater than one more volatile compared to the broader market.

Both alpha and beta are backwards-looking risk ratios. All calculations are made using past results, and past performance does not guarantee future results. Nonetheless, alpha and beta can help differentiate between relatively good and relatively poor investments over a defined period of time. The order of the funds listed in each category below start with the funds with the lowest beta/risk over the previous 3-year period, as compared with the index or benchmark that the fund is using for comparative purposes. As you scroll down the list in each category, the beta for the funds in that category will increase.

Disclaimer: Alpha and Beta measurements change from time to time if the funds composition and performance of securities shifts relative to the market as a whole or to the fund’s benchmark and the total risk analysis of all of the individual securities in the fund significantly changes relative to the benchmarks. Vista 401(k) will monitor for any such changes but cannot guarantee that, as such re-categorization occurs it will be discovered on a timely basis.
